Snoring Cures and Treatment: Snoring Case Studies

In the more than 25 years as Manhattan snoring specialist and practicing Ear, Nose, Throat doctor, David O. Volpi M.D., P.C., F.A.C.S., has cured hundreds of patients from their snoring through surgical procedures or non-surgical treatments. Numerous patients had severe snoring disorders caused by sleep apnea, nasal obstructions, anatomical sinus issues and more, and they now lead snore-free lives.

Here are just a few of their stories…

"Love and the Somnoplasty" Case Study

Michelle, a Manhattan real estate agent, described her snoring as "louder than any man I have ever known." She admits her snores were so loud, friends would mock her and her boyfriends would disappear. At 39, she was convinced her snoring was the reason she was single.

Michelle’s Somnoplasty

Michelle sought help for her snoring just as somnoplasty was introduced as a corrective procedure for snoring. In 2001 Michelle became one of the first in New York City to have a somnoplasty.

Somnoplasty is a nonsurgical medical procedure that uses radio-frequency to shrink the tissues in the roof of the mouth. It operates in the radio-frequency part of the electromagnetic spectrum at 465 Hz (pulses per second). The uvula and the soft palate can obstruct the upper airways, and somnoplasty uses heat to shrink their tissues. Although somnoplasty usually involves a single treatment, Michelle required two. The procedure is done under local anesthesia while a needle-like device is used to administer heat to the roof of the mouth.

Sorbet and Jell-O for Two Days

Somnoplasty procedures last about twenty minutes and Michelle reports, "There was no pain—just a little discomfort." Although she ate sorbet and Jell-O for two days, normal eating habits are not restricted after treatment. Most patients report mild swelling, a slight amount of speech distortion, and discomfort that typically lasts one to two days. Two months after her somnoplasty, Michelle met the love of her life, and snoring is no longer a problem.
